The Anointing of the Prophet To Be King

The Prophet of God heavy in heart and mourning for the fallen king, after receiving command of the Lord he began making his way through town with a mission to anoint the new king, the reputation of this servant of the Lord brought chill and fear to all, as he passed by the villages and market place some hid from him as it was told that we was passing by for fear of the glory of the Lord that rest on him. Surely the Lord has spoken to him about the next king of Israel which he will soon anoint. When he got to the house of Jesse he declared the Word of the Lord about the next king arising from his house. Jesse being a man of honor and God fearing called the three eldest seeing that they were of age and soldiers in the army of Saul.

The Prophet looked at them and asked Jesse if he had any more sons left, Jesse called the other Four sons and had them present themselves before the Prophet of God. Samuel looked at the other four and knew that out of the seven the next king was not here. Samuel turned to Jesse one last time and asked if he had any other son remaining, Jesse thought it insignificant to even mention the last but eight son but he did. Jesse called for David as he was a little ways off tending to the flock. The young brother came running from the field into the room, out of breath, all full of sweat, running down his neck and face, his hair all wild and knotted and uncombed, smelly.
All eyes upon him, suddenly there were a great silence and gross embarrassment among the brothers. He even looked at the door as though he was out of place and wanted to leave, his brothers looked at him with sneer and disgust, thoughts rushing in “this little pip squeak" what does he have to offer? Suddenly his eyes fell on his father, David asked “father, did you call me” yes my son he replied, I came running as I heard your voice, what do you want seeing that I had left the sheep unattended, Jesse replied “the prophet is here and has asked to see you” the moment Samuel laid eyes on him he knew that David was the one. Samuel said to Jesse “he is the one” he is the next king of Israel.
Can you only imaging the thoughts going through the minds of the seven brothers? David saw the Prophet, maybe he appeared much older than he expected but he was a legend in Israel. He was the Prophet who has judged Israel for many years and when Israel demanded a king, God had the prophet anoint Saul as king. The prophet declared to the young boy what the Lord had commanded him to do. Much disappointment on the faces of the brothers, Samuel took out his horn of oil and poured it upon the head of young David and pronounced him as the next king of Israel.

  • 1 Samuel 16:13 13. Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed David in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward. And Samuel arose and went to Ramah.
David a little puzzled but yet filled with a Godly wonder went back to the flock as though nothing had happened. Songs of praise began to burst forth from his innermost and he began to sing new songs unto the Lord without a crowd of people being present, he loved to play the stringed instrument so while tending to the sheep he would play on the instrument and sing unto the Lord. While tending to the sheep a lion came by hoping to snatch away the flock, David being a young boy now carrying on him the anointing of the prophet and the spirit being strong upon him, went head on to meet the lion and killed the lion with his bear hands, shortly after that a bear came by and tried the same, the young boy responded in the same fashion, not having a need to tell his story to his brothers because they would mock at him anyway.

The young man had no experience in leading a people or being a king to a nation but little did he know that God was training him in the back side of the wilderness tending to the sheep. Carrying a shine in his eyes and a glow in his face something happened inside him. It was as though he had a spring bubbling inside, he did not quite understand but it was a wonderful experience, as the years went by he was criticized by his brothers, maybe the old man might be losing his marbles, maybe he was growing senile when he came to our house and pronounced David as king, maybe he was wrong because we just can’t see it.

Nevertheless the prophet anointed David to be the next king and in the mean time while David is unrecognized and mocked and talked about and feels out of place, it just might be that the time is soon coming. Jesus came as a prophet, priest and King and he hath anointed us with the oil of gladness and the garment of praise and while we are in process and the position of kings is not yet, we might be talked about and laughed at and mocked and put down. But bless God that the time is close when we will come to that place of maturity. We will speak of the anointing of the Elders which will show us David ascending the throne in the next session.
